About This Website

An independent visitor guide dedicated to helping you plan a smooth, beautiful and well-informed visit to Belvedere Palace in Vienna.

The Belvedere Heritage

Commissioned between 1668 and 1745 by Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Belvedere is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. Located in Vienna's Landstrasse district, it consists of the Upper and Lower Belvedere complexes, connected by one of the most magnificent gardens in Europe.

Unlike many imperial palaces, the Belvedere was conceived as a museum and gallery from an early stage. In 1781, it became one of the first museums in the world to open to the public, setting a precedent for national art institutions globally.

Its history is deeply intertwined with that of modern Austria. On May 15, 1955, the Austrian State Treaty was signed at the Upper Belvedere, marking the country's freedom and sovereignty.

Today, the Belvedere is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to 800 years of art history, including the world's largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt, featuring the iconic "The Kiss".
